PICO continues the legacy of the Deeper Connect family of
products with the same plug-and-play setup and all the familiar features,
providing convenience for people who travel frequently. With an included Wi-Fi
Adapter, you can enjoy a safe and fast private network anytime and anywhere
whether you are at home or on the go.
Let’s open the box and see what’s inside.
We have the Deeper Connect Pico.
3 cable, 1 cable for power usb to type-c and 2 cable for
network type-c to RJ45.
5 volt Power adapter.
A nice Wifi dongle.
And a user manual.
When I first unboxed the Pico what stood out to me the most
was the size and feel of the device it reminded me almost of an iPhone. The
Pico is packed with features and yet could fit in the palm of my hand. I was
not
expecting it to be so portable, I won’t have trouble finding
a spot for it in my home. I am excited to plug it in and see what it can do!
What is a DPN and how does it work?
Unlike a VPN, whose servers are centrally distributed and
managed, a DPN is based on a very simple concept: each node is both a client
and a server. In a nutshell, in a DPN the users of the Deeper Connect Pico they
will share part of their bandwidth, to also play an active role in the
functioning of the network and all user data is cryptographically protected,
with a p2p connection.
Deeper Connect Pico connects internet users to a safe and
fast decentralized Virtual Private Network (VPN turned DPN), that blocks all
ads, prevents children from streaming restricted content, and unlocks
geo-blocked content without sacrificing internet speed.
It offers three different setup modes. The all-in-one
solution enables a fully Decentralized Private Network (VPN turned DPN) using
Multi-Routing and Smart Routing. This means family members can enjoy geo-locked
content from any country with ease and without sacrificing local internet
speeds. They can stream content from Europe, for example, while simultaneously
ordering a plane ticket in North America.
The Wi-Fi Adapter makes it easy to travel with Pico, while
its enterprise-grade cybersecurity service shields from viruses and Trojans,
prevents malicious tracking, detects intrusions, and restores safety online.
Deeper Network Pico ensures complete ad-blocking including encrypted ads that
interrupt YouTube streaming. One-click Parental Control prevents children from
seeing restricted online content. Pico also boasts zero-configuration and
subscription-free access for a lifetime. Annually, this saves Pico users
approximately USD $600 as compared to similar subscription-based services.
Further to this, Deeper Connect Pico enables a fully
Decentralized VPN experience (DPN) using Multi-Routing and Smart Routing. This
means family members can enjoy geo-locked content from any country with ease,
and without sacrificing local internet speeds.
By entering the control panel of the device, you will
immediately have access to a sort of map with which you can keep under control
the routing of your data packets and all the available nodes, which is enriched
by a textual list of all data packets sent. and received. In fact, the control
panel of the Deeper Connect Pico is chock full of options and possibilities for
managing and customizing the connection, but in order not to get too technical
we will focus on the features that could probably be more useful for an average
user: domain-based DPN routing management, privacy customization and firewall
management.
Also in the main dashboard, on the left a column has been
inserted with which you can access the various configuration sections, among
which the most important items are Device (in which you can access a detailed
summary of the use of the device), DPN (with which you can customize routing
and manage the connection), Security (in which you can manage the firewall, the
blocking of advertisements and the parental control) and finally Sharing (with
which you can manage the settings relating to sharing of the band).
Leaving aside the first menu item which, as I told you, is
nothing more than a simple summary of all the connections and active nodes, the
most important one in my opinion is precisely the section intended for the
management of the DPN.
In fact, by clicking on DPN, it will be possible to change
the connection mode to the decentralized network (choosing between the Smart
Route, Full Route and disabled functions) and you can choose to use the tunnels
located in some geographical areas (and change the connection IP ).
The most important section, as well as the one that in a
certain sense gives a lot of potential to this system, is that relating to
routing: it is here, that in Domain Config, you can decide the nodes (and
geographical locations) to be allocated to the various domains, and it is here
that, for example, you can choose to use YouTube with your direct connection,
and maybe Netflix via a US server.
Also in the sidebar then there is the section dedicated to
security, a "zone" of the operating system in which you can activate
the blocks for advertisements, the blocks for the draws as well as activate all
the filters necessary to make the firewall active and above all parental
control. And speaking of parental controls, in this section it is also possible
to activate the blocking of all pornographic contents. And, think about it,
this is a very useful feature that if configured the Deeper Connect Pico as a
bridge between modem and router, it will allow you to disable all these
contents (or perhaps specific domains) upstream of your home connection.
Deeper Connect Pico also helps users earn passive income. The
device allows idle bandwidth to be shared within the decentralized network in
return for cryptocurrency rewards through Deeper Network's own token, DPR.
“We want to make the internet more democratic, private,
secure, censor-free, and available to everyone,” said Russell Liu, Founder and
CEO of Deeper Network Inc. “Pico offers premium solutions in a plug-n-play
format.”
Deeper Network is a pioneer in the emerging era of Web 3.0,
creating the world's first decentralized blockchain network with the vision of
building a truly private, secure, and fair internet. Deeper Network Inc. was
founded in 2019 with a vision to leverage blockchain technology and empower all
internet users. Deeper Network is building both the Web 3.0 infrastructure of
the future and an accessible gateway for everyone to join the revolution.
And on balance, this is a rather reasonable figure,
especially considering that an annual subscription to a good quality VPN could
reach as much as 150 euros. With the Deeper Connect Pico instead, once you have
purchased the product you will not have to pay anything more. The only price to
pay will be to share some of your bandwidth, but sharing is also disabled in
the settings: at this point, however, the whole project would lose some of its
meaning.
Of course, it is a product that has limitations, such as the
need to connect it to an electrical outlet if you want to use it as a bridge
between the modem and the router (but, even here, it could be connected to the
USB socket of the router), or the limitation speed to 100 megabits. But all in
all, these are compromises that are more than acceptable for the vast majority
of people, who with a single device could be able to solve the problem of
online security in a clear and simple way.

In the world of DPN, the relations among the client, the server and the tunnel are as follows:
1. Each node is both a client and a server.
2. Nodes are fully decentralized, deployed and owned by the user.
3. Each node can establish multiple tunnels with multiple nodes in different regions.
Different APPs can use different tunnels to work simultaneously without conflicting with each other. At the same time, local direct access capability is retained to improve user experience.
VPN vs DPN
With the above description of the technology, let’s compare the advantages and disadvantages of these two technologies. The advantages of VPN
Professional VPN service providers often rent expensive data centres or cloud servers to provide high-speed access, with access speeds reaching several hundred mbps during off-peak hours.
The disadvantages of VPN
2. VPN service providers have full access to user data and are not regulated. In this case,
the safety of the user’s data depends on the ethical level of the VPN service provider.
However, even big Internet companies like Facebook collect, analyze, and sell user data
at will. Many low-cost or even free VPN service providers themselves are profitable by
data trafficking and phishing.
3. VPN servers are deployed centrally, mostly in a few major cities in a few countries
around the world. This implies that they provide users with an extremely limited choice
of geographic locations.
4. VPN server IP addresses are usually in the order of a few hundred or a few thousand,
which makes them easy to be identified and restricted by various websites.
5. VPN services offer only one tunnel for users to choose, this means that users need to
manually switch tunnels to use applications that require a different geographical
location.
6. Because VPN service providers need to rent expensive data centres or cloud servers to
provide services, this significantly increases the monthly payment making VPN services relatively expensive for users.
The advantages of DPN
1. The more users there are, the more idle bandwidth resources available which means no performance degradation during peak hours.2. DPN is a completely decentralized network, so there is no way for user data to be collected, analyzed, and sold.
3. DPN nodes are located all over the world, and as the number of users gradually increases, new nodes may appear in every corner of the world to provide DPN services.
4. DPN has billions of potentially available IP addresses, and most of them are the IPs of individual users, which cannot be identified and restricted by various websites.
5. DPN can establish dozens of tunnels at the same time and can choose suitable tunnels according to different domain names as well as IP addresses.
6. Users will earn DPR tokens when they contribute their own bandwidth, and spend DPR tokens when they use other users’ bandwidth, generally users do not need to pay for DPN service
The maximum downstream bandwidth of a DPN tunnel is limited by the upstream bandwidth of the shared node. We know that the upstream and downstream bandwidth of the average home user’s broadband are asymmetrical, with the average user’s home upstream bandwidth ranging from 10mbps to 40mbps, and only a few fiber users (such as AT&T and Google Fiber users) can have 1gbps of upstream bandwidth. DPN is not an ideal choice for users with extremely high bandwidth requirements for a single tunnel.
For this problem, DPN currently has several potential solutions.
1. Deploy a part of high-speed cloud nodes to provide the same high-speed connection as a VPN does.
2. For downloading applications, multiple tunnels can be used to download at the same time, for example, 50 tunnels of 10mbps can simultaneously download to reach a speed of 500mbps.
In addition, fiber solutions are becoming more and more popular in home broadband. It is estimated that within the next three years 1 billion users in the US, China, and Europe will have access to 1gbps fiber networks. By that time, even the speed of a single DPN tunnel will be comparable to that of a VPN.
